Patient Transport

Patient travel for hospital appointments is arranged by the patient transport team based at Islay Hospital and can be contacted on:

Patient transport clinics are held at the following times:
Rhinns Medical Centre - Wednesday 2.30pm to 4.00pm
Port Ellen Surgery - Thursday 2pm to 4.30pm

The following NHS Highland criteria will be applied to determine if a patient is entitled to an escort.

Definite Escort assistance:

  • Under 16 / Over 80
  • Registered deaf or blind
  • Mute, learning disability, mental incapacity
  • Requires use of walking aid
  • Escort travelling to return with patient after emergency admission

Probable Escort assistance (Referred to GP if ‘specific medical knowledge’ required):

  • Patient requires assistance after treatment / consultation (eye, (any)-scopy procedures, day surgery etc.)
  • Difficult news likely (cancer investigations, problems in pregnancy etc.)
  • Eye witness to illness required (e.g. epilepsy)
  • General anaesthetic
  • Common sense other conditions (cardiology, oncology etc)

There is now a direct patient booking service for Scottish Ambulance Service door-to-door transport and this service can no longer be booked through the PTC.  When you contact the booking line you will be asked a series of questions to establish whether you meet the criteria for this service.  If you are unable to phone, a relative or carer can phone on your behalf.
